You walk casually, swinging the laptop back and forth between your arms, which is easy, since it weighs well under one pound (0.45 kg) and isn't much thicker than a checkbook. Although it has no carrying case, you hardly blink after dropping it onto the concrete sidewalk. Instead you pick it up, dust it off, and continue on your way. When you arrive at your desk, you toss the laptop down on the table and open it up. The screen immediately unfolds, spreading out into an enormous display! While this scenario sounds very futuristic, it actually isn't that far from reality, thanks in part to a concept design called a Fabric PC (personal computer), produced by Fujistu, Inc. Amazingly, a Fabric PC won't be encased within a tough metal shell like the PCs that have been around up to this point.
It's called strobing, although you probably won't find that verb in the d­ictionary yet. Scientists at Intelligent Optical Systems in Torrance, Calif., have developed a rapid, strobe system that not only distracts the suspect, but also makes him rapidly nauseous, if not violently ill. Called an LED Incapacitator (LEDI), the device relies on light-emitting diodes. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security awarded the company a $1 million grant to develop and test its nonlethal weapon. Intelligent Optical Systems doesn't have a lock on the market. Several similar nonlethal devices exist, such as the Active Denial System (ADS), which uses microwave radiation. The ADS emits millimeter waves that heat up water in the skin's outer layers and cause a burning sensation. The idea is that the millimeter waves don't penetrate far into the skin, so no permanent damage results. The rather large ADS is mounted on a truck. It's effective for controlling large crowds, but it would be tough for a single officer or soldier to wield.
Gadi Evron, cybersecurity expert and CEO of Cymmetria, a security firm that helps organizations protect sensitive data by luring hackers into a hall of mirrors built from decoy servers and phony documents. The conventional cybersecurity strategy for large organizations was to play defense, scrambling to identify incoming attacks and patch holes in the network. It was the job of the security team to vigilantly monitor the network to figure out what's benign user activity and what's a threat. Likewise, it was the responsibility of regular employees to decide which emails are legit and which are phishing scams. But folks like Evron felt that short-staffed IT departments were expending way too many resources trying (in many cases, unsuccessfully) to keep the bad guys out of the network. What if, instead, we leave the door open and set a trap inside. Cymmetria sells a product called MazeRunner that's specifically designed to detect "lateral movement" inside a secure network. When a hacker infiltrates a system -- maybe with a username and password data stolen through a phishing scam -- he doesn't know exactly what he wants to steal, so he moves from server to server looking for the juiciest assets.
